Back to Basics (or The Return of the Shop.)

Ok firstly, the shop is back.

I would love some big fanfare! Some big ta-da about that, but there isn’t one. The shop is just open again.

There is a ton of stock that still needs to be added, (and will be added, bit by bit), but that big chunk of time I felt I needed to get everything up and perfect keeps refusing to materialise, so you get something more resembling reality: The shop is open. There will be more stock in there soon, bit by bit, and more stock on its way.

Oxford Kitchen Yarns Dyeing

Right now I feel very back to basics. We have been in our house nearly two years and there is still huge things to do – all the decorating, the kitchen, the bathroom, the electrics (soon), the secondary glazing, built-in storage, refurbishing existing storage…  I love our house and I’m planning for us to be here for a long time, but it’s still a big work in progress.

It’s a much bigger job than I ever thought it would be.

Anyway the point is, when living and parenting and working all at home it’s easy to get bogged down. To be made miserable by the lack of storage, by the very old wallpaper, by the carpets that I would happily rip up were it not for the fact that the floors underneath (at this point – most of the easy carpets are GONE. Hurrah!) are painted, and painted with gloss so that has to go before we can varnish, and taking the paint off takes a long time that we don’t currently have…

Sorry I lost myself for a moment.

Anyway for a little while, and with the shut shop hanging over me, I got a bit sad and felt a bit hopeless.

BUT… I turned back to the things that have helped in the past –

  • my timer (so that I’m just doing a tiny bit at a time rather than trying to do everything in one go)
  • making small lists and ticking them off
  • making lists of things I’ve actually done so that I can see what I’ve achieved on days when it’s all dirty nappies and stopping small children from jumping on each other and pulling hair
  • just doing one job at a time rather than three things at once
  • there are LOTS of charity shops around here so it’s easy to get stuff re-homed

…and slowly, very slowly, I’m trying to do what I can to sort things out a bit more.

And sometimes it feels hopeless and sometimes it doesn’t.

A Tidy Sideboard

Today I can see the top of the sideboard, and though it isn’t totally clear, it doesn’t need to be. It’s neat and I know what is going on with the few things that are there.  It’s as clear as it was when I worked on it yesterday, which means when I work on something else in the same room I will be moving forwards.

Hello moving forwards. I know I will pass you going the other way in a day or two, because I live in a house of tiny children and a million jobs that need doing, and it’s rained for most of the month… but I will also see you again going… well, forwards. And that feels good.

Onward Ho.

Yarn Along

If I’m honest, I have been feeling rather miserable lately. We have had SO many illnesses recently – we are in week 4 and my sinuses still hurt. FB had ANOTHER fever this weekend, though luckily it only lasted a couple of days this time.

But because of that everything has ground to a halt. Or so it seems.

The shop is still not sorted and therefore is still closed. It really pains me to write that.

However – The shop WILL get sorted and WILL be open very soon. I promise.

In the meantime up until this week I had done very little knitting. And – as you can tell – very little blogging. Partially because there wasn’t time around all the illnesses, and also because I felt bad blogging about things that aren’t the shop being re-opened.

But I have things I could blog about. I might blog about them anyway, and hope that you understand that the shop is really important to me, but that some making for my family has happened regardless, because the two tiny people in our family couldn’t care less about the shop. 🙂 In fact there are things from back as far as back as October 2011 that I haven’t told you about. So I might blog about them soon, regardless of my fears. And somewhere in amoungst those posts hopefully there will be a positive post about the shop.

We can be hopeful.

Yarn Along - Damson on my needles and Mason-Dixon Knitting in my Head

Back to the very little knitting, and onwards to the Yarn Along… I have been revisiting some knitting comfort reading, and it has really bolstered my spirit. The two Mason-Dixon knitting books by Kay Gardiner and Ann ShayneMason-Dixon Knitting and Mason-Dixon Knitting Outside the Lines are still superb – they are funny, fearless and read like they are knitting in the room with you. It was just what I needed, and I’m really grateful for that.

On my needles is Damson by Ysolda Teague, which I’ve been wanting to knit since it was released. This one is for my sister, as her wedding shawl. It’ll hopefully be ready in plenty of time for her wedding in June. I started it on Saturday and have been steadily plugging away at it and I’m currently about 10 rows from the border. Not bad for someone who isn’t getting much in the way of evenings right now.

Yarn Along - Damson on my needles and Mason-Dixon Knitting in my Head

It’s knit in OxfordKitchenYarns 80%BFL 20% Bamboo Sock Yarn in Milk. It’s a little thicker than the OKY 100% BFL sock yarn and slightly sproingier, and has a slight sheen to it. I think it’s wonderful to knit with, and have another project waiting in the wings in a great orange called Ginger Tom.

And it will be in the new shop! SOON!

The Last Day of Winter

blanket knitted by my nannan

Good news! I have a working camera! This means that once everyone is well I will take new photos of all the stock ready for the new shop. Hurrah!

Bad news! We still have the lurgy! I was properly ill over the weekend, and now FB has a high fever. 🙁 For those of you keeping count we’re now at week 3. This is definately a different bug from last week and hopefully in a couple of days (optimistic??) things will be better. *crosses fingers*

With our extra leap day today we have:

  • not had a nap, and then finally had a nap (and by we I mean LR)
  • sat on my head while I tried to make a phone call after abandoning said not-nap (again, LR)
  • we have helped a policeman with a hammer (true story!)
  • made flapjack
  • and fruit and nut balls (the Lara Bars from Kitchen Stewardship‘s Healthy Snacks to Go)
  • watched Nigel Slater’s Simple Suppers (it’s that or Totoro when we are ill.)

Hopefully I’ll be back soon with news that we are all healthy and that the shop is up and running.
